Getting sick after a major win isn't coincidence. It's biology collecting a debt cortisol helped you defer.

I've started calling it the victory cold.
Almost everyone I work with has had one — the sore throat that arrives the morning after the deal closes, the fatigue that hits the first day of vacation, the Sunday after the product launch when the body seems to remember everything it set aside. Most people assume they just pushed too hard. They're not entirely wrong. But the mechanism is more specific than that, and understanding it changes how you manage the days that follow a sprint.
Why the timing is never random
Cortisol is immunosuppressive — by design, and for good reason. During sustained high output, it suppresses the pro-inflammatory signaling that would otherwise slow you down. The immune system stays active, but its activation threshold is held higher than normal. Pathogens you encounter during that window — a virus on a flight, an exposure at a conference — are met and partially contained. Not resolved. Held.
When the sprint ends and cortisol drops, the suppression lifts. The immune system activates the cases it deferred. The symptoms that follow aren't the illness beginning — in most cases, they're the immune response finally completing. The window when this happens is typically 48 to 72 hours after acute stress resolves.
Which is exactly when most people board the plane home.
The reframe
Most people interpret getting sick after a hard push as a sign they went too far. The more accurate frame: the body was managing the load competently the whole time. Cortisol is not a failure state — it's a tool the nervous system uses to prioritize. The immune suppression during a sprint is adaptive.
What isn't always managed is the transition out of it.
The 48-to-72-hour window after a major push is not a time to celebrate and coast. It's a transition — the cortisol brake coming off, the immune system reactivating, the body shifting from performance mode to repair mode. That transition has real substrate requirements. When those aren't met, the rebound feels harder than it has to.
Three things support the transition: sleep (the immune system does its most active work during deep sleep), nutrition (particularly zinc and vitamin C, both consumed rapidly during immune activation), and giving the body 48 hours before treating the next sprint as already begun.
When timing is everything
The clinical logic behind an Immune Defense protocol in the post-sprint window isn't reactive — it's anticipatory.
Zinc is a cofactor for the immune enzymes that regulate T-cell activation. Vitamin C at IV concentrations — far above what the gut can absorb — supports neutrophil function during the reactivation window. Glutathione protects immune cells from the oxidative stress of their own activity; an immune system mounting a response generates reactive oxygen species as a byproduct, and glutathione is the primary buffer against that.

Recovery isn't the absence of a sprint. It's the management of what the sprint left behind.
